The number of so-called staged car accidents appears to be rising with people trying to defraud motor insurance companies out of thousands of euros by claiming to have suffered serious injuries following a road collision. This was one of the most common cons exposed for fraudulent claims, as was staged burglaries and people having more than one policy in place to insure the same item.

An Irish Insurance Federation (IFF) spokesperson revealed that the number of fraudulent claims that were made each year were not recorded by them, but did say the IFF had received almost 4,000 calls since the Insurance Confidential hotline, set up for people to report fraudulent claims, was established over 5 years ago.

One incident, which occurred before Christmas, saw eight people attempt to stage an accident involving two separate cars in Munster. The fraud was unsuccessful, but the Gardai think that this trend is increasing and has seen bogus injured passengers attempt to obtain huge sums of money from insurers.

The Gardai grew suspicious about two-car road collisions after one incident saw eight ambulances called to the same scene on a busy road. When emergency services arrived, they were faced with passengers lying on the ground, claiming to have suffered serious injuries when one car rear-ended the other.

The Gardai were suspicious about the extent of the injuries being claimed though as the impact between the two cars only appeared to be minor. They were satisfied that the passengers of the cars were attempting to claim for injuries that were not consistent with the accident, as neither of the vehicles involved had been badly damaged.

Photographic evidence was taken at the scene so that if any fraudulent claim was made in the future it could be that the damages claimed by the passengers could not have been sustained in an incident.

The road where the incident took place was closed off for three hours whilst ambulance crews attended to the 'injured' and the gardai also seized both the vehicles to conduct further examinations.
